Lunch at Breizh Café in Kyoto
When we lived in France, each time we went to Paris, we would go to the Breizh Café in Paris Le Marais, at this time we had read on the Figaro newspaper that they were making good crepes. The first time we went there we had the good surprise to see that all crepes are made with organic flour and that many other ingredients are also organic when possible.
Since we are in Japan we never thought of going out to eat crepes, but recently (February 2021) the Figaro newspaper from France mentioned again Breizh café in Paris as having one of the best crepes. And we found out that they had a branch restaurant in Kyoto. In this time of corona virus, we do not go out too much but sometimes when it feels good we go to a restaurant, so we decided to go.
We called to reserve and we did good as many people came for Lunch. The restaurant is easy to reach by walking from the Sanjo train station.
When we sat down at our table, at first we ordered a bottle of organic cider, the waitress asked twice if this is what we wanted, it seemed that it was not really usual that customers order a bottle of cider, but in France it is very common.
We ordered one galette (salty crepe with buckwheat flour) and one crepe (with wheat flour) each. We had one galette with egg, salmon, spinach and tomatoes and one sweet one for dessert.
It was all so good that we forgot to take photos of the crepes. We went back on March 10th 2021, and this time you can see below photos of the crepes. It was as good as the first time, we keep this address in our book of good restaurants.
The menu is clear and it makes it very easy to choose what to order.
All staff and chef are wearing the Britanny stripes shirt to give a feeling of Britanny, France. They all wear the same shirts in all Breizh Café restaurants.
Update: On October 20th 2021, while walking in the area, we saw that the restaurant does not exist anymore, it has closed!
In front of the restaurant is a display of jams and ciders that people passing by can buy. There is also a French flag to indicate that all products are from France.
Inside the restaurant, there is a ground floor space and a first floor space. It is a bit smaller on the ground floor where the kitchen is, it can accommodate up to 10 customers.
More space is available on the first floor.
Galette with spinach, tomatoes, egg and salmon.
Crepe for dessert with strawberries, vanilla ice cream, mint, chocolate sauce and crumble. So good!
